Sun & Moon—Ultra Prism
Status: Released (February 2018)
Prism Stars Shine in Ultra Prism
A wormhole to a new dimension opened on February 2, 2018, with the massive Sun & Moon—Ultra Prism expansion. This set introduced "Prism Star" cards—powerful Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy cards limited to one copy per deck. These cards were so potent that if they were discarded, they were sent to the "Lost Zone" instead, removing them from the game entirely. The set focused on the Sinnoh region, featuring new forms of Necrozma (Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings) and the best card in the entire Sun & Moon block: "Cynthia."
Cynthia and the Lost Zone
While the Prism Star mechanics were flashy, the supporter card "Cynthia" defined the competitive standard for years. Allowing players to shuffle their hand into their deck and draw six cards, it provided unmatched consistency without the drawback of discarding resources. The set also introduced "Buzzwole-GX" and "Lycanroc-GX" decks that dominated the meta, but it was the "Magnezone" ability to accelerate metal energy to "Dusk Mane Necrozma-GX" that allowed for some of the highest damage output the game had ever seen. Sun & Moon—Ultra Prism was a set that truly changed the rules of engagement.
